Rope Work

ROPE WORK

There are too many sources for this information

Before you think of rope, think of Girls with long hair. Each individual hair is weak but grouped together they get strength. Girls weave hair into plaits. And the process is

1. Brush out all of the hair. (Fibres)

2. Divide Hair (Make strands) (Over here Yarn is missing)

3. Cross the right section (Start Lay)

4. Cross the left section (Start Lay)

5. Repeat process (Weave rope)

6. Tie off hair (Finish off ends)

I am sure a woman was the first to invent a rope.

History is at least 15000 years old. To make a rope we have Fiber/Fibre, Yarns and strands.

Fibre: Fiber or fibre (see spelling differences, from the Latin fibra) is a natural or synthetic substance that is significantly longer than it is wide. Think of cotton fibres.

Yarn: Fibres are spun (woven) into yarns (Threads).

Strands: Yarns are woven into Strands.

Finally Strands are woven(Braided) into Ropes that we see.

Process is similar to braiding hair into plaits.

Natural fibers are short but synthetic fibers are endless.

Similarly Wire ropes are made. Again wires are endless in length. Process is first wire then strands and finally Wire rope. You tube has videos on Manufacturing processes of ropes and wire ropes.

Please go through various books and web sites to find out about construction, care, maintenance and storage of Ropes and Wire ropes. Also understand coiling, uncoiling, opening new coils, cutting etc. From examination point, you need to compare Natural fiber and Synthetic fiber ropes.

Ropes are NOT LUBRICATED.

ONLY WIRE ROPES ARE LUBRICATED INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY.

CHAINS ARE NOT LUBRICATED.
